The 8 Qualities of Self Energy in IFS

Dr. Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, describes Self energy through eight qualities often referred to as the “8 Cs.” These qualities naturally emerge when our protective parts soften and allow Self to lead. They are not traits we have to force ourselves to develop. Rather, they are qualities that are always inside of us and tend to appear when our nervous system feels safe and our parts feel heard.

Calm

Calm means there is a steadiness within you even when emotions are present. There is a sense that you can stay with your experience without being completely swept away by it.

Curiosity

Curiosity is the ability to look inward with openness rather than judgment. Curiosity asks questions like, “What is this part of me trying to communicate?” This gentle inquiry often creates space for deeper understanding.

Compassion

Compassion is one of the most powerful aspects of Self energy. It allows you to approach the parts of yourself that carry pain, fear, or shame with kindness and grace instead of criticism.

Clarity

Clarity helps you see situations and emotions more accurately. Rather than being dominated by a single emotional reaction, you are able to understand what is happening internally and externally with greater perspective.

Confidence

Confidence in IFS comes from trust in your ability to navigate challenges and care for the different parts of yourself.

Courage

Courage allows you to face difficult emotions and experiences that protective parts may have been trying to avoid. It is the willingness to stay present with what is true, even when it feels vulnerable or really uncomfortable.

Creativity

Creativity often emerges when Self is leading because the system is no longer locked into rigid protective patterns. This openness allows new perspectives and solutions to appear.

Connectedness

Connectedness refers to the sense of relationship both within yourself and with others. When Self energy is present, people often feel more open, empathetic, and able to connect authentically.

You may notice that these qualities of Self energy begin to appear naturally during therapy. Instead of feeling internally conflicted, you experience more steadiness, understanding, and trust in yourself.

At Wild Path Therapy, I work with women throughout California using Internal Family Systems therapy to help them access and strengthen Self energy.
